It is common for science fiction to envision future worlds in which robots and other intelligent systems coexist and closely cooperate with human beings. Today we have the first automated vehicles (AVs) on our roads, and the first service robots operating close to us, in some cases, within our own homes. Reality seems to be catching up with fiction.

However, a beneficial coexistence between humans and robots will depend on the interaction between them, which should be properly considered when developing autonomous systems, to ensure that it is safe, intuitive, and effective.
